“Before the Fire Starts”
$1 National Campaign.

Last August, I was the first person on the scene of a fire on my block. I didn’t hear about it later. I didn’t see it on the news. I saw it with my own eyes, what a fire does to a home, to a family, in real time. And the truth is… many, depending on the situation, a lot of it could have been prevented. That’s why I started Before the Fire Starts, because prevention shouldn’t come after loss.

We created the $1 Campaign so anyone can be part of the solution. This isn’t about asking people for large donations. It’s about bringing people together, one dollar at a time, to do real work:

  • Provide free home inspections

  • Identify fire hazards early

  • Support basic safety upgrades for families who need it most

For just $1, you’re helping us step in before something happens. If you can give more, that’s appreciated. If all you can give is $1, that still matters. Because when enough of us show up, we can prevent what I saw that day from happening to someone else.

Please watch the video. Share it. Support if you can.
And if you know a family that needs a free inspection, send them to us.
Let’s deal with it now, "Before The Fire Starts".

Too many fires could have been prevented.

Join us for “Before the Fire Starts.”
Real information. Real solutions.

Free home inspections available; attendance required to qualify.

We’re also raising funds to help homeowners with critical safety upgrades.

Community Economic Pathways to Host “Before The Fire Starts” Event Focused on Fire Prevention and Home Safety

The Detroit Fire Department will play a key role in an upcoming community safety event hosted by Community Economic Pathways, bringing critical fire prevention education directly to residents of Detroit.

Captain Edward Davis, a leader with over 23 years of experience in fire service, will be one of the featured speakers at the “Before The Fire Starts” FREE Community Event. Known for his commitment to fire prevention and public education, Captain Davis will share practical, real-world guidance on how residents can better protect their homes and families from fire hazards.

As part of Community Risk Reduction (CRR) efforts, Captain Davis will focus on educating attendees about fire safety, including the importance of working smoke detectors, creating effective fire escape plans, and avoiding common household and seasonal fire risks. His approach centers on giving residents clear, actionable steps they can take immediately.

The event will take place on
Monday, May 11, 2026,
Time: 5:00 PM
Location: Johnson Recreation Center
8550 Chippewa Ave, Detroit, MI 48221

In addition to the fire safety presentation, attendees will also hear from a master electrician who will break down basic electrical upgrades homeowners can make to improve safety and reduce the risk of electrical fires—an issue that continues to impact many older homes across the city.

Community Economic Pathways will also be offering a valuable opportunity for residents to sign up for free home inspections during the event. These inspections are designed to help identify potential safety hazards before they become serious issues. However, registration will only be available in person, and residents must attend the event to secure a spot.

This event supports Community Economic Pathways’ mission to provide education, resources, and real opportunities that strengthen the community. By combining fire prevention, electrical safety, and direct access to home inspections, the program is focused on helping residents take control of their safety before a crisis happens.

We encourage residents to attend, learn, and take advantage of the resources being offered.
